چکیده

In the soft-wet environment of biomolecular electron transfer, it is possible that structural fluctuations could wash out medium-specific electronic effects on electron tunneling rates. We show that beyond a transition distance (2-3 A in water and 6-7 A in proteins), fluctuation contributions to the mean-squared donor-to-acceptor tunneling matrix element are likely to dominate over the average matrix element. Even though fluctuations dominate the tunneling mechanism at larger distances, we find that the protein fold is "remembered" by the electronic coupling, and structure remains a key determinant of electron transfer kinetics.

Charge Transfer in Dynamical Biosystems, or The Treachery of (Static) Images

CONSPECTUS: The image is not the thing. Just as a pipe rendered in an oil painting cannot be smoked, quantum mechanical coupling pathways rendered on LCDs do not convey electrons. The aim of this Account is to examine some of our recent discoveries regarding biological electron transfer (ET) and transport mechanisms that emerge when one moves beyond treacherous static views to dynamical framewo...

The Principles and Recent Applications of Bioelectrocatalysis

Bioelectrocatalysis is a phenomenon concerned with biological catalysts, which accelerate the electrochemical reactions. Bioelectrocatalysis has been widely explored by the research community in various directions. Enzymes can catalyze different chemical reactions in living organisms by enzymes as the most important biological catalysts. These enzymatic biocatalysts are commercially available a...

Biological electron-transfer reactions.

A wide range of biological processes makes extensive use of electron-transfer reactions. Rigorous characterization of a biological electron-transfer reaction requires a combination of kinetic, thermodynamic, structural and theoretical methods. The rate of electron transfer from an electron donor to an electron acceptor through a protein is dependent on the difference in reduction potential of t...

Implication of Barrier Fluctuations on the Rate of Weakly Adiabatic Electron Transfer

The problem of escape of a Brownian particle in a cusp-shaped metastable potential is of special importance in nonadiabatic and weakly-adiabatic rate theory for electron transfer (ET) reactions. For the weakly-adiabatic reactions, the reaction follows an adiabaticity criterion in the presence of a sharp barrier. In contrast to the nonadiabatic case, the ET kinetics can be, however considerably ...

Quantifying electron transfer reactions in biological systems: what interactions play the major role?

Various biological processes involve the conversion of energy into forms that are usable for chemical transformations and are quantum mechanical in nature. Such processes involve light absorption, excited electronic states formation, excitation energy transfer, electrons and protons tunnelling which for example occur in photosynthesis, cellular respiration, DNA repair, and possibly magnetic fie...
